Travel Insurance in Malaysia: Things to Know Before Going on Your Next Trip!

I like travelling. Especially now that I have adult money, I love exploring the world, and I aim for at least one international trip a year. For me, travel should be stress-free, which is why I never leave home without travel insurance.

What Does Travel Insurance Usually Cover?

Medical and health travel insurance ensures that you’re covered if you fall sick or get injured abroad, with some plans even including coverage for hospitalisation.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance protects travellers from financial loss if there's a flight delay or cancellation, or they have to cancel plans due to emergencies like illness or natural disasters, covering prepaid expenses such as flights and hotels. Meanwhile, baggage and personal belongings insurance offers compensation for lost, stolen, or delayed luggage, ensuring you’re not left stranded without essentials.

How and Where to Buy Travel Insurance?

For my previous trips, I tend to pay a little extra for basic insurance coverage when booking flights. For many Malaysians, the most convenient way to get travel insurance is during the flight booking process. Airlines like Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia offer add-on travel insurance options when you're purchasing your tickets online.

These basic coverage plans typically include medical expenses, trip cancellations, flight delays, and lost baggage, just enough protection for short trips.

Nevertheless, while these airline-linked insurance plans are handy, they may not always offer the most comprehensive coverage. If you're going on a longer trip, planning multiple stops, or participating in adventurous activities, it's worth exploring standalone travel insurance providers.

For instance, I purchased a travel insurance plan from MSIG for my recent trip to South Korea. These companies usually offer a wider range of plans tailored to different travel needs—whether you're going for Umrah, taking a cruise, or traveling with your family. What's more, you can compare the policies and prices before actually paying.

Types of Travel Insurance Coverage

When purchasing travel insurance, most providers in Malaysia offer two main types of coverage.

Single Trip Travel Insurance

A Single Trip Travel Insurance is the most popular option among Malaysians, especially for those going on a one-off vacation, business trip, or pilgrimage like Umrah. This type of coverage protects you for one continuous journey—from the moment you leave Malaysia until you return home. It typically includes essential benefits such as medical emergency coverage, compensation for flight delays, lost baggage, and trip cancellations.

Getting covered for my South Korea trip via the MSIG online website was incredibly easy. All I had to do was enter my destination, travel dates, and personal information. It’s an ideal choice for occasional travellers who want peace of mind without committing to a year-long policy.

Annual (Multi-Trip) Travel Insurance

Annual (Multi-Trip) Travel Insurance is a smart choice for frequent travelers who take multiple trips throughout the year. This plan offers unlimited travel coverage within 12 months, with each trip usually capped at 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the provider. It includes all the standard benefits such as medical coverage, compensation for trip delays, lost baggage, and other unexpected disruptions.

There will also be a difference in price depending on the area you're travelling to. For instance, the coverage for countries like Australia, Japan, and Thailand is cheaper than that for countries like Iran, Iraq, and Russia.

Since you don’t need to buy a new policy every time you travel, it can save you the hassle and be more cost-effective in the long run. It’s perfect for business travellers, digital nomads, travel content creators, or families who go on trips during every school holiday. If you’re always planning your next getaway, this plan ensures you’re always covered, no matter where you go.

So, Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

It really depends on the individual. But if I am travelling overseas, I would always want to make sure that I am being protected, so I can explore and have fun with peace of mind. What do you think?
